Metal decor tips for Keller homeowners

Metal Decor

While trends in home decor often change, there is one constant design feature that continues to shine, literally: metals.

Today, Keller homeowners can find creative ways to incorporate a regal touch that produces a timeless look with modern appeal.

Take the Temperature

A first step in implementing metallic decor is understanding the temperature of the metals. Think of brass, copper and gold as warm, while silver and aluminum are cooler, and cast iron or black metals are neutral. When you couple up a warm metal with a cool metal, you're golden. As a thought starter, step into the kitchen and balance copper or gold fixtures with stainless steel appliances.

Heavy Metal Mixing

It can be daunting to mix metals the right way, but understanding general rules can open the doors to creative approaches. A key tip is to avoid mixing the same color family - such as gold and brass, or nickel and silver. Rather, choose one metal that can serve as the dominant and another to complement it - remembering your temperatures. And, don't be afraid to blend the same metal with different finishings to diversify the theme and pull a room together.

The Gilded Age of Flooring
Achieving the golden look isn't done through metallic finishes alone. One way to bring the shine to a room is with flooring that reveals hints of a glimmering gold stain through a lightly wirebrushed chestnut base. Pairing decorations and fixtures with the sophisticated backdrop of a unique floor design creates an elegant space that's rich in style.

Add Elements of Luxury
A smart way to use metals is to go for the subtle shine. Simple and strategic touches of metal can bring a big impact, such as in picture frames, drawer pulls or door handles, and sink fixtures. You can also add a bit of regal to a room with accents on furniture or other fabric items such as pillowcases or throws, and kitchenware on display.

A Gold Medal for Metal
Metallics in home decor are as durable and lasting as the elements themselves. Incorporating the shine of brass, the sleek of silvers and the burnish of bronze can give your Keller home an opulent and refined look

4 tips to keep pantry pests out of your Keller home

Pantry

When it comes time to plan your holiday guest list, your invitees generally fall into one of two groups: those you want to invite, and those you feel you must. There is a third group, however, that's never intentionally included on any guest list: pests. Whether by box or by bag, pantry pests such as Indian meal moths, merchant grain beetles, cockroaches and ants can invade your Keller home without your knowledge and wreak havoc on your holiday cheer.

Suddenly, your "must-invite" list doesn't look too bad.

Pantry pests can infest common baking ingredients such as flour, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate and more. They flock to secluded food sources like your pantry and can become major nuisances to homeowners due to their quick ability to infest an area in a short amount of time. To protect your goods and the rest of your home from pests this holiday season and beyond.

Make it a total kitchen effort. Your work to protect the cleanliness of your pantry will be more successful if you are vigilant about your entire kitchen. This means routinely emptying trash receptacles, clearing crumbs from countertops, scrubbing the floors and running the dishwasher. The more uninviting to pests you can make your entire kitchen, the less interested they will be in your pantry.

Inspect your packages closely. Sometimes pests enter your home before you can even take steps to prevent it. This can often be the case when the food you purchase is already infested. You can protect yourself from rolling out the red carpet for these pests by closely inspecting your food packages before tossing them in your cart. Avoid purchasing any package that shows a hint of damage, and once home, be sure to toss anything that's expired.

Store things properly. Plastic containers with secure lids are affordable and invaluable when it comes to protecting your pantry goods from pests. Look for plastic or glass solutions instead of other materials, and always try the lid before you buy. A poorly fitting lid can jeopardize all of your pest-proofing efforts.

Work with a professional. If pantry pests are spotted in the kitchen, discard the infested foods in outdoor trash bins and clean all of the shelves in the cupboards with a vacuum. Be sure to also partner with a licensed pest control professional to properly handle the infestation to keep pests from multiplying and contaminating other foods in your Keller home.

What's Causing Attic Noise in Your Keller Home?

Was that a squeak you just heard? A thump? What could possibly be making those noises inside your Keller home, and what can you do to help get rid of whatever pest has decided to move in? Below is some inside information on what might be going bump in your attic.

Birds
Chirping or flapping coming from your attic area indicates that a bird (or two) may have decided to make a home up there. If your attic area has high ceilings or open beams, birds will have ample room to fly around, perch and maybe even roost or nest. Baby birds hatching in your upstairs might sound cute, but you probably don't want to deal with unsanitary bird droppings all over your attic.

Rats and mice
If you hear scratching, gnawing, scurrying or squeaking noises coming from your attic, you could have a rat or mouse infestation. These rodents can find their way into your home through a variety of entry points; anything from a roof vent to a poorly sealed window frame can provide access to your attic and the rest of your home. Mice in particular are excellent climbers, and roof rats - a type of rat - have been known to enter houses by accessing the roof via climbing on tree branches or nearby vines.

Bats
You might think that tiny hole in your attic wall is too small for any pest to fit through. Think again. Bats, which can weigh less than two ounces, can fit through a hole as small as the diameter of your finger! Some species like to nest in trees, which means they could be attracted to the wood framing in your attic. Since these critters can carry rabies and other disease-causing pathogens, don't try to remove the pest yourself. If you think bats might have made their way into your attic, contact a professional.

Squirrels
Rustling and other noises coming from your attic could hint at a lot of different critters. But if you're hearing those noises during the day, that's a hint that squirrels, which are diurnal, could be causing the ruckus. These animals are persistent and can damage the exterior of your Keller home. They're also easily excited and can cause more damage when they feel cornered, so don't try to take one on yourself.

5 Safety Tips for DIY Moving Days

DIY Movers

Changing residences can call for the coordination of a lot of details, and that’s especially true if you’re a do-it-yourselfer who’s renting a truck rather than hiring a moving company. Though the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the average American changes homes 11.4 times in his lifetime, many of us never take time to think about the potential safety hazards involved. Usually we’re way more focused on the challenges of figuring out all the logistics, packing up our possessions in logical fashion and starting the psychological adjustment of having a new place of residence.

Still, it’s important to take a moment to think about best practices for the safety of you and your family as you plan your move. For Keller homebuyers or sellers, consider taking the following steps toward a safe and organized moving process.

1. Assign roles. Organize your packing and loading crew so everyone knows his role. Your work will be much more efficient — and you won’t get in each other’s way — if your friends and family members are each assigned a task according to their physical capabilities. As a side note, you may wish to keep small children completely off-site so the adults can focus on the often-physical work at hand.

2. Choose a reputable rental company. Secure your moving truck from a reputable dealer, then follow its specific instructions for safely packing and driving the vehicle. Look for a clean, reliable, well-maintained vehicle every time, with a range of available packing and moving tools and the peace of mind that comes with 24-hour roadside assistance.

3. Optimize tools. Use dollies, hand trucks, harnesses and/or multiple people to lift boxes that weigh more than 50 pounds. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer you may take pride in being able to handle any chore yourself, but you need to remember you'll be self-sufficient no longer if you sustain an injury from trying to be superhuman.

4. Lift correctly. When picking up anything even moderately heavy, avoid back injuries by keeping your back vertical and your chest forward. Draw the item as close to your body as possible while bending at the knees and lifting with your legs, avoiding bending horizontally as you straighten.

5. Be aware of obstacles. When moving items out of your house and into your vehicle, watch for items that could trip you or get in your way, such as low-hanging obstacles, ground protrusions or surfaces that are wet, slick or uneven. Wear close-fitting clothing that can’t be snagged and choose durable footwear that offers both support and traction.

The DIY moving process need not be difficult or risky as long as you plan ahead and take a few precautions. Using this advice, new Keller homeowners can thrive on their moving day.
