Landscape project tips for Keller homeowners

Working on Front Lawn

Home improvement projects aren't constrained to a single season, but during these warmer months, your focus is no longer simply on your Keller home's indoors. Now there’s outdoor yard work to do as well, and if you're looking to recreate your outdoor space, your outside projects may include some landscaping. If you have landscaping as part of your to-do list this season, the right strategy can ensure that you get the most benefit from your landscaping goals with the least amount of headache.
To that end, here are five tips to simplify your landscaping projects this year.

Plan for the entire year. Landscaping projects can be hard work, and because of that, you deserve to enjoy them for as long as possible. That’s why it’s important to plan your landscaping layout with the entire year in mind. Research your plant and flower options based on bloom periods and plant a variety so your yard is always being introduced to new pops of color. You should also add evergreen shrubs and other such plant life to your overall plan to give you a spot of color in the winter and preserve your landscaping look.

Be mindful of other tools outside your home. When developing your landscaping strategy, you need to be aware not only of your home but the other vital components outside as well. Many homeowners are not mindful of their home’s HVAC units and may place landscaping solutions too close to the unit, which makes it difficult for techs to service the unit and exposes your system to the harmful effects of debris. Instead, plan to keep all landscaping at least two feet away from your HVAC system.

Touch every corner of your yard. Your Keller home is naturally the focal point of your yard, but it doesn’t have to be the only one. Creating a berm — a mound-type space that you can fill with rocks, wood chips or a flower garden — can add a pop of color and visual appeal to an otherwise plain area. These visual attractions can be placed anywhere, but adding one to an otherwise deserted corner of your yard is a great way to tie the entire space together and make the most of an unused area.

Add plants that fit your lifestyle. When planning your landscaping project, it’s important to remember this isn’t just a one-time solution. Your landscaping will need continual work, and as such, your landscaping plan should be based partly on the time you have to dedicate to the project. For example, if you’re a person who appreciates beautifully colorful flowers but doesn’t want to replant them every year, you should start your project by planting perennials instead of annuals. Your time commitment in year one will be roughly the same, but you’ll ease your time requirements in the years ahead.

Monitor your budget. Like many things, a lavish landscaping project can get away from you very quickly in the financial department. Veteran landscapers know that it becomes very easy to get swept up in the project and before you know it, you've added a slightly larger tree or another bush or two. Then you suddenly have unexpected costs heading your way. Instead of ending your exciting project on a bad note with a higher bill, plan out your budget ahead of time. Try to get as specific as possible with where you plan to spend every dollar. The more you can hold to each line item in your budget, the better you’ll be able to avoid unnecessary expenses throughout the process.

Making landscaping improvements to your yard can be a fun and rewarding project provided you follow a strategy that makes the best use of your time and money. Apply the tips above and you'll be rewarded with a beautifully landscaped yard that you can enjoy every day of the year.

3 warm-weather home cleaning tips

Keller Home Living Room

Warmer weather and more daylight hours bring renewed energy to truly enjoy your home with family and friends. Spring is a great time to get rid of the lingering grime and grit of winter to keep your clean home happening all season long. With a thorough home clean, you can create a vibrant living space for your day-to-day life, whether it’s playing with the kids, tackling your to-do list or simply relaxing. Here are three tips to help tackle some of the dirtiest places in and around your Keller home.

Wash your windows
You’ll be surprised how dirty your windows have gotten and how much brighter your home, and outlook, will feel once they are clean. First, remove the screens and use a vacuum’s extendable attachment to remove the loose gunk and dust. Then, wash with soapy water and a firm brush, rinse with a hose and let air dry. For especially dirty windows, first clean with soapy water, then move on to an even mix of water and white vinegar. While using a lint-free towel or cloth will help avoid streaks, a car windshield squeegee is the expert choice.

Tackle indoor surfaces
It’s important to make sure guests at your next get-together experience a clean and healthy Keller home — but a full vacuum bag or clogged filter can reduce suction, leaving the dirt, dust and allergens that build up on many surfaces behind. For an ideal clean, make sure your vacuum is at its peak performance by replacing bags and filters. Filters are designed to capture allergens, and need to be replaced every one to two months for bags and every three to six months for filters.

Spruce up outdoors
Winter weather and activities can take a toll on the finishes and surfaces outside your home. Cleaning a few key areas will refresh your home’s look and feel as you spend more time enjoying your outdoor spaces for birthday parties, barbecues and more:
  • Siding: No need to get complicated — first, rinse with a garden hose, then scrub the dirty areas with a brush and soapy water and rinse again. Make sure to avoid chlorine-based bleaches to keep surrounding plants healthy.
  • Driveway and garage: First, soak up oil, stains and other nasty winter reminders by spreading a drying material, such as sawdust, on the stain. Leave it for one day before scrubbing with soap and water. A power washer can be used for particularly tough stains.
  • Grill/barbecue: For gas grills, make sure the propane is disconnected. Then, soak the grates in hot soapy water and rinse. Scrub thoroughly under the hood and on the inside walls with a hard brush, first covering the heating elements, to get rid of grease and particles from last year. Wipe down with a damp towel.

Floor cleaning 101 For Keller Homeowners

Keller Homeowner Cleaning Floor By Dog

Flooring trends change through the years as homeowners acquire new tastes and technology allows for a larger variety of flooring designs. Deep ebony and driftwood finishes peaked in 2017, while 2018 trends are pushing toward wider planks, gray tones and even durable porcelain tiles designed to mirror wood grains.

As today’s flooring choices evolve, the importance of maintaining a clean floor remains constant, especially if you have kids and pets. But, clean floors don’t need to translate to hour-long scrubbing sessions on your knees. Instead, it should take minimal work to get the job done and it shouldn’t matter what type of floor you have. Here are some tricks and tips on the best ways to get your Keller home's floors looking new and spotless in no time:

Laminate floors
Even though your laminate floors might look like hardwood or tile, you still need to care for them a certain way. It’s important that you keep water from getting under the planks, so it’s recommended that you regularly dry mop or vacuum the floors. You never want to polish laminate floors and, if a plank looks damaged, it is best that you just replace it with a new one.

Linoleum floors
These type of floors are easily susceptible to water damage, so you need to clean them with caution. Vacuum them to prevent scratches and wipe up any spills as soon as they happen. You can spray a linoleum floor in sections and then wipe with a damp cloth as you go. If sticky messes find their way onto linoleum floors, use a soft, scrubbing pad to clean it up.

Hardwood floors
Most hardwood floors have either a wax or polyurethane finish. Waxed hardwood floors can be damaged with even small amounts of water, so keep damp mops away from this type of floor and just dust mop and vacuum it daily. Depending on the amount of traffic or abuse the floor takes, consider a floor cleaner with a safe, non-toxic neutral pH-balanced formula as it will not leave behind film, residue or streaks, just a clean fresh scent.

Tile and grout flooring
If you have stubborn stains or dirt embedded in grout lines, you can opt for a deep grout cleaner. Simply spray it on the floor, let it sit for a few minutes and then scrub it with the grout brush. Without the use of harsh, acidic chemicals that infiltrate your Keller home, dingy grout will become brighter, lighter and stay clean long after you are done.
